attack. >> reporter: that is a big question. why would something like this and how would something like this happen? what we do know is that the baby is here, with stab wounds to both her head and neck. and the mother is in custody. >> reporter: behind these doors, a gruesome scene. >> stabbed the baby in the eye. >> reporter: ahmad dendy looked across the street. >> the employees, they were hysterical. running out, hysterical, crying. >> the police showed up. >> reporter: they ran into the state office, which runs the foster care for the city. it's here, where parents are allowed to visit the children they had taken away from them. >> the baby's mom was visiting with the baby and a social worker here at the location. at some point, the mother became irate. pulled out a long kitchen knife and began stabbing the baby. >> reporter: when police arrived, they arrest the baby's mother. >> i can't believe the baby got stabbed. it's just fine. >> reporter: soon, the baby and the mom are taken away in separate ambulances. >> we do have the mother in

custody. she's being questioned. we have to check on her mental stability as well. >> you feel bad for the child. because you know, they probably were in a bad situation if they were over there. so, you know -- then she was able to come in there and, you know, do harm to the child. so it's like, where is the children safe? you know what i'm saying? >> reporter: neither police nor social services say if the mother stopped stabbing on her own or if someone interceded. >> we don't know why she became irate. we just know we have a baby in the hospital. again, the baby should be okay. >> reporter: the state is trying to find out if their procedures are adequate. they have baggage checks, identification checks. they want to know how someone like this woman got in there with a long kitchen knife. reporting live from hopkins, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. >> very important questions that need to be answered. >> the mother has not yet been charged. the lead detective in a

high-profile case has been arrested. >> reporter: the lead detective in the phylicia barnes case, daniel nicholson was arrested on allegations that he forced his way into a home to search for his own daughter, who ran away from home. phylicia barnes vanished, visiting her sister in northwest baltimore in december 2010. her body was found months later near the conowingo dam. there have been no arrests in her murder tonight. police confirm detective nicholson has been suspended and is the subject of an investigation. denise? >> thank you, mary. according to police, nicholson's daughter returned home yesterday and is safe. today, wjz learns of a third arrest in the beating of a man outside a baltimore courthouse. police say they took diangelo carter into custody, around 2:30 this afternoon. he is the third person to be arrested in connection with the attack, on st. patrick's day. detectives say the group beat and robbed a tourist. police are still searching for a third suspect.

shatia baldwin. after several days, the trial is getting under way, for two brothers accused of beating an african american teen. weijia jiang is following this story. and how it's being compared to the trayvon martin case. weijia? >> reporter: vic nboth cases -- in both cases, many people believe the attacks were racially motivated. in fact, they said that the outrage is so widespread, they'd rather have a judge make a ruling instead of a jury. >> reporter: a trial is expected to begin wednesday, in the case against brothers 24- year-old eli yahoo. and 21-year-old afi werdesheim, accused of beating a 41-year- old in 2010. it upon in the baltimore park heights community. questions immediately surfaced over whether the violence was racially-motivated. >> i think we represent every young person in the city, who experiences these types of atrocities taking place every day. >> reporter: the werdesheims

are jewish. eli is part of an orthodox jewish group. the victim is african american. police charging documents say one of the brothers told the teen, quote, you don't belong around here. end quote. >> this isn't a hate crime. this isn't anything more than a disputed fact, between two people over a relatively minor misdemeanor charge. >> reporter: in recent weeks the case has been closely linked by national media outlets to trayvon martin's in florida. there, zimmerman is charged with the 17-year-old's murder. accused of racially profiling. in fact, werdesheim's lawyer said the details are so unclear, asking the judge to make the decision because it would be impossible to find an impartial jury. >> reporter: the victim said on the stand, he was cornered, slammed to the ground, and beaten. >> reporter: the trial is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 9:00. we'll be here, bringing you the

latest. for now, we are live at the courthouse, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. both brothers face multiple charges, including false imprisonment and assault. we have breaking news over the scene of east baltimore. >> we're over the scene of a shooting in north wood and houston. what you're seeing is baltimore police chasing a suspect on foot,a way from the scene. a male was laying in the street, on north wood avenue. apparently was shot in the chest. that victim has been taken to a waiting ambulance. and baltimore police were on the scene when suddenly this foot pursuit broke out. now, we did see a person running from police. he apparently is in custody, on the other side of this house. they were trying to get to at this time. what we know of the situation is police, when they arrived, were given a description from witnesses that a light-colored acura, was being sought in reference to this shooting.

now, when police were on the scene suddenly, we saw this male run from the scene. now, police chased him down. and took him into custody. this is alongside of a row home, about two blocks from the scene. now, it is not known if this person is wanted in reference to the shooting or not. but officers at least half a dozen officers on foot chased this suspect into a yard and took him into custody. at this point, the police are still looking for a white acura, that was seen leaving the area of north wood avenue, near winston. it's not known anything else about the suspects at this time. the victim, as we said, was placed in a waiting ambulance. he is critically injured. we know he is likely to be taken to hopkins hospital, which is the closest trauma center. he was shot in the upper chest area and nonresponsive when police arrived. we will stay on the scene and keep you updated as we continue to gather information. >> thank you very much. captain mike perry. five people are found dead

inside a home in maryland. right now, investigators believe that carbon monoxide poisoning is to blame. it happened in oxon hill, prince george's county. police say two people were found by a family member. when firefighters arrived, they found three more victims. they detected extraordinarily high levels of carbon monoxide in the home. cocaine in candy bars. customs agents released details about an unusual drug bust at dulles international airport. a total of four pounds of cocaine was discovered inside chocolate bars and juice boxes, in a woman's luggage. she had arrived on a flight from el salvador. the drugs have a street value of more than $100,000. officers removed the woman from the united states. the ice may be cracking in the house. a senate stalemate that ended without a balanced budget. governor o'malley meets with the leaders of both chambers this morning. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren has the results that was meeting.

>> reporter: that's right, vic. the governor, the house speaker and the senate president are engaged in working out a time line for special session to solve the state's budget woes. and that could come in the middle of may. >> reporter: governor o'malley met with the house and senate leaders today, two weeks after a compromise on the state income tax increase fell apart. and time enough for what has been called a cooling off period to take place. >> have you had that cooling off period that was being talked about immediately after this session? >> i don't know. the cooling off, i guess that's one way to describe it. look, we're kind of under the clock right now. >> reporter: that ticking clock is illustrated in a model created by the state education association that shows how many days, hours and minutes take place until budget cuts result. >> they were on the opposite side of the table. but they were sitting next to each other. and they were like right next to each other. i was like -- this far away from that. >> kidding aside, school systems and county governments

are eager for news, since $512 million in cuts are at stake. and as a taxpayer, you should be interested in how much avoiding those cuts will cost you. the original senate plan raises income taxes on everybody who makes more than $3,000 a year. the original house plan puts a sliding tax increase on those who make more than $100,000. the senate had agreed to the house plan. but the session ended before a vote. >> i would hope that this week we'll be able to hash out what, in essence, would be a final budget resolution. >> reporter: and believe it or not, the governor is considering two special sessions. one, as i said, in the middle of may, that would deal strictly with the budget. a second one later this summer, on expanded gambling, as an additional revenue source. reporting live, i'm pat warren. now, back to you. >> just curious here, pat. and you may not have the answer to this. but is that budgeted? the cost for having the sessions?

>> the cost for having the sessions? >> yeah. the extra sessions. >> they'll have to find the money for that. although i keep hearing from lawmakers that it's not as much as you might think. although it's going to cost taxpayers additional money. >> pat, thank you very much. the budget takes effect on july 1st. there is now a new superintendent of schools here in maryland. today, they welcomed lillian lowry. governor martin o'malley was on hand. lowry was the first for delaware. and she replaces interim state secretary bernard sandusky. sun is out. but still a little cooler than it usually is this time of year. wjz is live with first warning weather. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating the first warning weather for us. here's bob. we have a couple of sprinkles and a couple of showers that have popped up to our north and northwest, and also to the northeast, as can you see. still possible between now and about 7:30 or so, a few folks might see a brief shower before it clears out. temperature-wise, around the region, we are at 61 degrees

now. orc land, only at 43. the most of the snow that fell yesterday is pretty much gone. most of it, at least. 55 in ocean city. and a warmer 62 down in pax river. but today's temps are running, as you can see, 10, 15, 16 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. so yesterday was extremely chilly day for the end of april. but we had all of that rain. speaking of rain. and those numbers they keep adding up. and that's good news. bernadette has a look at the numbers. >> that's right. wjz drought watch continues to watch these numbers and track for april. for the month so far, we have gotten just over an inch of rain. 1.62 inches, actually, to be exact. now, for an average april, we get 3.19 inches. and we do have a week or so left in the month. but we also have another chance of rain coming our way, from three different storms later in the week this. is what is happening. the storm track is going to set up with a storm on thursday.

bringing us rain, maybe a thunderstorm. then it leaves this track in place, friday into sunday. and as that's happening, we'll see a couple of different storms move along it. with a decent chance for some drought-denting rains. we'll keep you updated and have that coming up. back inside. voters in pennsylvania and four other states are heading to the polls right now. mitt romney could take a big step forward, logging -- locking up the gop resignation. danielle nottingham has tonight's campaign 2012 report. voters are casting their ballots in five states, where more than 200 delegates are at stake. mitt romney is expected to win all five. >> many people in the republican ranks have decided that they should line up behind him. >> thank you so much. thank you. >> reporter: mitt romney may be in the lead to win his party's nomination. but he's still working to win their support. >> you can always express your opinions, with the others running. but there's more on that ballot

store it is partly sunny. 65 degrees in central maryland. two dogs chased and killed in the end. an adult. it is all caught on tape. >> reporter: neighbors say those dogs are still at large, even though they know who the owners are. >> andre hawthorne is recovering from his injuries, after using his body as a human shield. >> i threw my left arm up. and the dog gripped this. while he was gripping this hand, i was using my right hand to punch on him. >> two big dogs. they weren't going for nothing. >> reporter: the two dogs

pinned haw foreign. one clamped down on each arm. >> started shaking him like he's a rag. >> reporter: a neighbor's surveillance video shows the dogs on the attack, charging after two children. two teenagers jumped on the car to get away. but one of the dogs followed after 11-year-old xavier bryant. >> i kept running. >> when you saw the dogs jump on the car after him, what were you thinking? >> i was thinking i was literally about to lose my son. then i opened our building door and let him run in. and the dog came running in behind him. >> i just saw the children were in danger. and i automatically reacted. >> reporter: hawthorne had a knife and injured the dog, but they couldn't -- they wouldn't let go until a neighbor got after them with a bat. >> i'm glad i'm still alive. >> reporter: neighbors say they are scared of these dogs. and they're concerned because a day care is located just across the street from where all of this happened. vic? >> what an amazing man. what a horrible story.

mary, thank you so much. d.c. animal control say its is investigating this attack. and a shocking case of animal cruelty in anne arundel county. anne arundel authorities say they believe this the owners of that golden retriever puppy tried to neuter it without any medical help. the puppy was rescued and received emergency care. charges are pending against the owners. it went to three alarms. but a fire in canton imposed another risk. >> reporter: firefighters knew early on that sunday night's three-alarm fire at the eastern plating company in canton involved potentially dangerous chemicals. >> the chemicals that they use on a daily basis are hazardous. >> reporter: so more than fire was the focus of the attack. and specialists were called out. >> hazmat, copy and come in. we're coming around the block now. >> reporter: people down wind were evacuated briefly as a precaution.

>> there were a couple of containers inside. approximately 650 gallon containers that contain sulfuric acid. >> i was aghast. and i was afraid a little bit. >> reporter: but it turns out, there was a lot more than the acids sitting at the heart of the fire. >> about 8,000 gallons of acids that are typically used in plating operations. >> reporter: most of the acids were stored away from the worst of the fire and remained intact. but where the building burned, water flushed acids out into storm drains. to dilute it, maryland department of the environment added more water. >> we were looking for signs of the stress of aquatic line. we didn't see any. >> reporter: before demolishing what is left of the building, any chemicals still intact will have to be removed. >> secure the site from outsiders. and pump out. >> i hope so. i hope they get them out. kind of worrisome. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news.

>> reporter: now, according to baltimore city fire, no one was injured during the three hour its took to contain the fire and the three chemicals. a cooler day, but we saw the sunshine. >> sun was out, until about 2:00 3:00. clouds now. it will be warmer tomorrow. 61 now. that's been our high for the day. humidity only 21%. the chance of even getting a rain drop through that area is pretty slim. west winds at 10. we'll look at that wednesday forecast coming up after th,,,,,

all righty. take a look at temperatures. high for the day at 61 degrees. normal high today would be around 67, 68. 47 in oakland. much -- or most of the snow, is gone. they had yesterday. 54 in cumberland. 55 in ocean city by the ocean. and 60 over in rock hall. up in westminster, down to 57. west wind coming in. tomorrow, the winds a little more out of the west and southwest. going to warm us up into the 60s. we'll see sun. and tomorrow night, more clouds moving in. from a system developing out west. actually, a warm front. it's been pretty warm out here. in kansas today, it was 93 degrees. yeah. so that warm air is rotting over top of this cooler air here in the east. going to create some clouds and showers already popping up here in illinois, through kentucky. that warm front will be approaching us. but not until tomorrow night. to the north of us, look at that. low pressure still spinning around. a little snow and rain shower

it's 6:30. 61 degrees. and partly cloudy. in central maryland. good evening, everyone. thanks for staying with wjz. here's some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a former aide is sharing intimate detail l tail -- details about john edwards' affair. >> the prosecution's star witness, andrew young, came to court and zeroed in on the heart of the case against john edwards. >> good morning. >> that the former presidential candidate used illegal campaign contributions to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. the former campaign aide said

he insisted on speaking in code, because he quote, couldn't know about this in case he was sworn in as attorney. >> this claim that they spoke in code suggests that he might have known that these contributions were illegal. and that's a key part of the government's case. >> reporter: young also testified that when edwards heard hunter was pregnant, he made a derogatory comment about her, saying there was only, a quote, one in three chance it was his child. young testified that hunter threatened to go public. so they used nearly $1 million in donations from wealthy supporters. >> reporter: young says to keep it hidden, young promised to communicate with her on a back phone. and for a time, hunter used the alias, jaya james. but young says he is not guilty of a crime. >> if you have a mistress and you are flying her aaround the

country to keep her from your wife, you're not really committing a crime. >> in greensboro, north carolina, dick brennan, week eyewitness news. >> edwards' attorneys are expected to attack young's credibility. at one point, young faked that he was the father of edwards' baby. and he even had hunter live with him and his family. updating the breaking news on the secret service scandal. three more employees are being forced out of the agency. this brings to a total of nine who have been fired or forced to resign for their roles. a number of others are still being investigated. well, the justice department makes the first arrest related to the gulf oil spill. a former bp engineer is disiewz accused of destroying evidence- - accused of destroying evidence. when a rig exploded and set off an oil leak. investigators say 50-year-old curt mix of texas, deleted a string of text messages that involved information about

efforts to cap the leaking well. so far, bp has no comment. the search continues tonight for a young arizona girl. mary is in the newsroom with more on where detectives are looking now. >> reporter: there is still no sign of 6-year-old isabel sules. officers spent the day combing the area, looking for evidence in the case. isabel's parents say they woke up saturday morning, looking to find her gone from the bedroom. police and the fbi say they are continuing to work closely with the family. >> we continue to have their cooperation. we'll be talking to them again this morning. as to getting them back into the house and helping them do that. >> there's an open dialogue there. >> an fbi dog's search of isabel's home turned up information that required a follow-up. but agents wouldn't go into detail. isabel is described as light skinned, 44 inches tall, weighs 44 pounds. >> police are calling the case a suspicious disappearance, possible abduction. new twists in the trayvon martin case.

while george zimmerman is now in hiding, the police chief who will came under fire for his handling of the case, tries to quit. but as mark strausman explains from sanford, florida, city leaders turned him down, at least for now. >> chief lee deserves a better shake than this. >> reporter: sanford city commissioners had to decide whether to accept the resignation of police chief bill lee. his department became heavily investigated. they never arrested george zimmerman, his admitted killer. many in sanford agreed lee needed to go. >> the whole idea is for the community to come together. what i poke holes today is one of the ways i think will move the city forward. >> but the chief's supporters pressured the city not to scapegoat the chief. and they voted 3-2 not to accept his resignation. >> aye. >> approve to deny the memorandum. [ applause ]

>> reporter: george zimmerman, released on bond, has gone into hiding. out of jail, police won't protect him. he is responsible for his own safety. has family says zimmerman can't afford private security. so they'll accept private donations. he's out and exposed. i'm hoping to keep him safe. and truly hopeful that they will let it work. and find out what happens. i think when we do, then the emotions may resolve a bit. >> reporter: across the country, the case has struck a nerve. just recently, there were two separate beatings. one in chicago, another in mobile, alabama. in both cases, the attackers allegedly claimed they were at least partially motivated by the trayvon martin shooting. >> we have to think, is this the way we want america to receive this? and react to it? do we really want the violence level to go up between people because of this case? i'm very concerned about that. >> now, it could take months for the federal investigation

to be there. for now, the future is in limbo. a pretrial hearing for the army private accused in the largest leak. lawyers for private manning are arguing that the charges should should be dismissed. manning is accused of leaking thousands of documents to the wikileaks website. his trial has not been scheduled. the hearing is taking place at fort meade. a bitter divorce brings officers to the home of former baltimore raven. police say the estranged wife of retired nfl player deion sanders attacked him inside his home. confirmed the couple's children at the texas home. the two are going through a divorce. pilar sanders is out on bail. deion sanders played for several nfl teams and has been inducted into the hall of fame. time now for a quick look at some ares you'll find in the baltimore sun. the lead investigator in the phylicia barnes case now finds himself suspended for actions taken in another case. rep sippies for -- recipes

a close call for two california firefighters. take a look at the scene. they were checking out a small fire. when an electric vault suddenly

exploded in front of their faces. amazingly, they only suffered minor burns and bruises. police in florida are looking for the man behind a vicious fast food attack. surveillance video shows the suspect climbing over the counter at a mcdonald's, in lakeland, with a bat in hand. you can't see it in the video. but police say he started beating a manager because he wanted food. apparently the man was angry, because the manager skipped over him in line. >> the manager is really nice. and he is a new manager. they just reopened it with new management. >> that's kind of sad that people don't respect people enough to just leave stuff. >> police say the manager tried to help the suspect out about 20 minutes before the attack. but he refused and left. britain's phone-hacking scandal is putting rupert murdoch's family back in the spotlight. rupert's son james testified before a panel today. monica via miczar reports. >> james murdoch adjusted his

you can see it on masn. and oakland a's will be in town. sunday, you can see the o's and the a's here on wjz. game time, 1:30. and among the football fans who are interested, orioles manager buck showalter, who asked us today, what do you think the ravens are going to pick? now, showalter went to college at mississippi state. so he's not a big fan of rival alabama. so buck may not be happy if the ravens pick bama linebacker, daunte hightower, with the 29th overall pick on thursday. hightower is an all-american. a big part of alabama's defense that was ranked best in the nation. hightower grew up idolizing ray lewis. and some see hightower as the possible heir-apparent to ray lewis if the ravens pick him. and they do have their eye on him. >> hightower is a great player. there's no doubt about it. he's an explosive guy. we've seen him play live, many times, through the alabama connections.

>> good evening. all 12 of the u.s. secret service agents and officers caught up in that prostitution scandal in colombia have now been fired or resigned, or retired, or cleared. the director of the secret service acted against the last of his personnel today. a separate investigation of 12 members of the military continues. knor are a o'donnell is at the white house tonight with the late breaking news. norah. >> scott, tonight secret service officials credit director mark sullivan for move being quickly to clean house. we learned the fate of those five additional agents today. two were cleared of any wrongdoing, two resigned and one was fired. director sullivan made a rare personal appearance on capitol hill today to assure lawmakers that he was moving to resolve the scandal threatening to tarnish the secret service. and by the end of the day, those implicated in the prostitution scandal had been dealt with.
